Life is so much easier when you install a dog door for your four-legged friends. Dogs and cats can come and go as they please without you having to be involved in the process of putting on your jacket and shoes to take them outside! However, pampered pooches can get stressed and sad when their route to freedom gets blocked or stuck. So, here’s a step-by-step guide to keeping your pet door problem free, with a little help from WD-40®!

Clean Inside The Door

The middle part of pet doors – between the inner flap and outer flap – can get dirty as your pooch passes through. So, it’s important to clean this regularly to minimise the amount of dirt being brought into your home. The easiest way to do this is with a vacuum cleaner with a hose attachment. Simply suck all the dust and grime out of the space.

How to Clean Dog Door Glass

The glass or plastic on a dog door can get very grimy with dirt from outside, but also with constant tapping from wet noses! Don’t use alcohol or window cleaning treatments on them as this could cause plastic to dry out and crack (and also wouldn’t be great for little tummies). Simply add some dishwashing liquid to warm water and rub the grime off with a microfibre cloth. Then take another cloth and dry off any remaining residue.

Maintain The Locking Mechanisms in a Dog Door

While it is lovely to let your pets come and go as they please, there may be times when you want to keep an eye on them and know exactly what they’re up to! For this reason, most dog doors have a locking mechanism. It is essential to keep this free from dust so that it always works when needed and doesn’t become stiff. It is also important to make sure the lock stays free from moisture to prevent it rusting. Trusty WD-40® Multi-Use Product works a treat on stiffness and rust should it occur, simply spray some on a microfibre cloth and gently wipe all over the lock.

Lubricate Hinges

Regularly check the hinges of your dog door to ensure no sticking. Whilst checking, carry out some light maintenance to ensure they continue to perform well and to prolong their lifespan. Grab some WD-40® Specialist High Performance White Lithium Grease and spray the entire hinge. Using a microfibre cloth, work the product in, and wipe away any excess. This will ensure the hinges are well lubricated, to prevent squeaking, cracks and frost protection.

Double Check Everything!

Once you’ve carried out your cleaning and maintenance, check everything is in working order. For this you’ll need your four-legged friend (and a treat or two!). Make sure they can easily get in and out of the door un-hindered and that you have put all the parts together again properly!

Keeping your dog door well maintained keeps you and your fury friends happy- and lets you both enjoy some freedom!
