Trellis panels are vertical frameworks used to support climbing plants such as ivy and honeysuckle. Often featuring a criss-cross pattern, the frames provide a structure for vines and plants to grow upon, creating both a beautiful feature, and extra privacy. So, you love the look, but do you know how to attach trellis to a fence?
If you’re looking to elevate your garden (quite literally!), you’re in the right place! Continue reading to discover how to attach trellis panels to a fence like a pro here…

Before getting started with your DIY, it’s a good idea to gather all of your tools and materials into one space. Once these are collected, take a few minutes to prepare your workspace – ensuring your space is clear, dry, and free of clutter. It is also important to prep and pre-measure your fence to ensure your chosen trellis panel will fit!
What’s more, equipment, such as your drill, should be checked to ensure it’s in good working condition for the most efficient experience. If you notice any stiffness or rust on your tools, WD-40® Multi-Use Product can be used to help to remove and prevent rust, improve lubrication, and promote smooth movement. Simply spray a small amount of the product onto a clean microfibre cloth, and gently work it into any metal surfaces. You can find out more on how to maintain your drill.
Now that your workspace is ready to go, and you have prepared everything you need, it’s time to get DIYing! Using a pencil and measuring tape, mark up exactly where you want to place your trellis on the fence. Ensure you align your trellis to the fence panel centrally for a symmetrical, professional look.
Now that your pencil guide is on the fence, position your trellis according to the marks you have made. Check that you are happy with the position visually and ensure that it is centred and levelled to your satisfaction.
Once you have confirmed you are happy with the positioning, it’s time to start drilling. Pre-drill holes into the pencil marks you created earlier. Pre-drilling helps to prevent the fence panels from splitting or splintering, and makes inserting the screws later on a smooth process.
Now you have completed all the prep work – you can attach your trellis to the fence!
Starting at the top and working downwards, drill your trellis into the pre-drilled holes using long screws. After each screw, use a level to ensure you stay on track. Tighten the screws securely, but avoid tightening them too much, as this can cause damage to both the trellis and the fence.
Once you are happy with the look, wiggle the panels gently and make any necessary adjustments to ensure a secure fit.
Nice! You have now fitted your trellis! But here comes the fun part – personalisation. Personalisation is of course optional, but can have longevity benefits for your trellis. Choose a weather resistant stain or paint to apply to your trellis, in your colour of choice. This will help to keep the trellis in good condition, no matter the weather!
