There’s nothing more irritating than uncovering rust or corrosion on tools such as your saw. Many of us believe rusted items instantly belong in the bin, however, there’s always the possibility of returning it to its original state with simple yet effective methods. Learn just how to clean a rusty saw blade in a few simple steps below.
Did you know cleaning an old, used, and rusty saw blade for restoration or maintenance purposes can be quite an easy task? All you need to do is get hold of a few basic maintenance materials, such as used newspapers, paste wax, boiled linseed oil, a metal scraper. and some sandpaper.
Ready? If so, let’s get going and move on to the five essential steps of maintaining a rusty saw blade.
When you are working with your saw, you must be wearing a good pair of protective gloves, goggles, and a mask. These will not only shield you from the sharp blade of your saw, but will also safeguard you from mineral spirits and the boiled linseed oil. Both liquids can be irritating to the skin. Ensure you are extremely careful throughout the process- safety first, always.
Old newspapers will prove to be the perfect partner when protecting your table or any surface area you plan to work on. It will also make the cleaning process easier as the entire rust residue from sanding and scraping tends to create quite a mess. Once you’re done with the job, all you will have to do is get rid of the newspaper. Job done.
We recommend that you use blade scrapers to get rid of the surface rust on your rusty saw blade. This can be done by holding your blade scraper at a low angle and using short strokes that move from one end of the blade to the other. You begin with an initial scrape and keep repeating the movement till you believe you have removed as much of the rust formation as possible. You can then wipe down the rust residue to check how much has been cleaned off.
Fine sandpapers can give you a ‘feel’ of sanding, whereas thick sandpapers won’t. These should then be used with paint thinners to speed up the process of de-rusting your rusty saw. Only use a small amount of the paint thinner though, and don’t forget to have your gloves and mask on!
