Fireplaces are great to have when the temperature drops, but keeping them clean and in working order can be a bothersome chore. Regular cleaning and maintenance not only improves the appearance of your fireplace, but also increases its efficiency, too. So, how do you clean and maintain your fireplace like a professional?
Well, you’re in the right place! Continue reading to discover how to give your fireplace the TLC it deserves.
So, let’s get started! Begin by carefully removing any ash and debris from the fireplace. Use a fireplace shovel to scoop out ashes, and a stiff brush to scrub the dirt from the interior walls. Remember to wear protective clothing during this step, including gloves and a mask, to ensure a safe and clean process.
Once the main bulk of ash and debris has been removed, it’s time to dive into the details. Scrub the fireplace grate with a stiff brush to remove ashy residue. Then, wipe it down with a damp microfibre cloth to ensure it is sparklingly clean and ready for the next use.
Next, maintain the aesthetic appeal of your fireplace by wiping down the surroundings and removing any dust or debris. For brick or stone surrounds, consider using a mild solution of water and dish soap to gently disrupt any built-up dirt. If your fireplace has a smoother surface, use a suitable polishing spray to maintain a superb shine.
To keep a clear view of the roaring flames in your fireplace, it is a good idea to clean the glass doors. Using a suitable glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth, gently wipe away any soot, dust, and fingerprints using a circular motion.
Top tip: For a streak free finish, opt for a lint free cloth.
If you notice the moving parts of your fireplace, such as the doors or drawers, are stiff or squeaky, you should take a few minutes to lubricate them. Using WD-40® Multi-Use Product, squirt the specialist formula directly into the affected hinges or rollers. Open and close the door or drawer a few times to evenly distribute the lubricating product. This should effectively ease stiffness and stop squeaking in its tracks. Be sure to remove any excess product before use.
