Wall panelling is a fantastic way to add character to any wall, or cover any unsightly imperfections. Despite its high-end looking finish, panelling is actually fairly simple to achieve – if you know how! This step-by-step guide will help you learn how to complete DIY panelling like a pro. Let’s get started…
MDF panels
Measuring tape
Pencil
Spirit level
Saw (circular saw or hand saw)
Safety goggles
Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)
Wood adhesive
Hammer
Nails (if necessary)
Primer and paint, or wallpaper
Paintbrushes or wallpaper tools
Before you begin any DIY wall panelling project, you should always ensure you are well prepared for the task at hand. Remove any clutter from your workspace and ensure it has sufficient
ventilation. Protect your flooring and fixtures appropriately, and ensure you protect yourself, too.
If you are using any tools, ensure they are in tip-top condition for the best efficiency and results. For rusty, squeaky, or stiff tools, treat with a squirt of WD-40® Multi-Use Product on the affected area. The product effectively helps to remove rust and annoying squeaks, and also lubricates for smooth movement.
Finally, collect your equipment for the task at hand. Nobody wants to be searching the house for a screwdriver mid-way through a tricky step (we’ve all been there!).
Now that you’ve prepped everything, it’s time to jump in! Start by measuring the height and width of the wall where you want to install the panels. Decide on the spacing you want on the panels, and then plan the layout, marking the panel positions on the wall with a pencil and spirit level.
Using your saw, carefully cut the MDF panels to the desired size according to your measurements. Always wear safety goggles while cutting to protect your eyes. Then, using a medium-grit sandpaper, smooth the cut edges of the panels to ensure they are smooth and splinter free. Then, follow up with fine-grit sandpaper to achieve a clean finish.
Once you are happy with the shape of your panels, it’s time to place them on the wall. Apply a generous amount of wood adhesive to the back of each panel – ensuring you cover the edges and corners for a strong bond.
Once applied, carefully position each panel on the wall, aligning them with your marked guidelines. Press firmly to ensure a strong bond with the wall. If you want your panels to be super secure, you can also use a few nails and a hammer to make sure they stay in place.
Now for the fun part. Once your panels are on the wall and looking great, it’s time to decorate! It is up to you to decide if you would prefer to use wallpaper or paint. Either way, you should prime your panels before decoration of any kind. Using a primer of your choice, prime the MDF panels to create a smooth surface for paint or wallpaper.
Once the primer is dry, apply your chosen paint or wallpaper according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow the paint or wallpaper to dry completely.
