Looking to take on a DIY project to spruce up your bathroom space? Discover how to drill through tile like a pro by following this handy step-by-step guide. With a bit of planning and the right tools – you can tackle this DIY project with ease. So, are you ready to get started?
A power drill (Corded or cordless)
A drill bit designed for tiles (preferably a diamond-tipped or carbide-tipped bit)
Masking tape
Safety goggles
Pencil
Measuring tape
Sandpaper
Let’s get going! To begin with, you’re going to want to take some time to plan where you are going to be drilling. Ensuring you aren’t drilling into any wires or pipes, use a pencil to mark the spot where you want to drill.
Now you have determined where you are going to drill, you need to protect your tile. Use masking tape to create a cross shape over the spot you marked. This will help prevent the drill bit from slipping and scratching the tile, ultimately protecting the tile from cracking.
Next, prepare your drill by choosing a drill bit suitable for tiles, preferably a diamond or carbide-tipped one. It’s essential to use the correct bit to avoid damaging the tile – diamond tips are ideal as they make easy work of penetrating the tile.
Be warned, if you use an ordinary drill bit, you might be at risk of damaging your tiles – so this is not recommended.
If you notice any stiffness or rust on your drill, it is a good idea to tackle this before moving forward on the project. You need optimum performance for the best results! WD-40® Multi-Use Product can be used to help to remove and prevent rust, improve lubrication, and promote smooth movement from your drill. Simply spray a small amount of the product onto a clean microfibre cloth, and gently work it into the metal surfaces. You can find out more on how to maintain your drill.
Before you start revving your drill, make sure you put on your safety goggles to protect your eyes from tile fragments or debris.
Then, hold the drill perpendicular to the tile and start drilling at a slow speed. Apply gentle pressure and let the drill bit do the work. Continue gently building pressure to create the hole – avoiding excessive force that might crack the tile. Drill slowly through the tile until you reach the desired depth.
If you notice the drill bit heating up, pause, and let it cool down. You can also use water to keep the drill bit from overheating during the drilling process.
Once you’ve successfully drilled through the tile, remove any masking tape and clean up the area to get rid of any unwanted tile debris.
Inspect the hole to ensure it’s clean and smooth. If there are any rough edges, you can use sandpaper to smooth them out. Et voila!
