A clothes horse is an essential bit of kit whose importance is often overlooked. Whether you use yours as part of a play tent for the kids, or for drying your undies, it is essential to keep it in pristine condition. Especially for those rainy days when outdoor drying (or playing) is simply not an option. So, knowing how to fix a clothes horse is always important to know!
Read on for some top tips on how to maintain your maiden and clothes horse, with a little help from WD-40® brand…
Never underestimate the power of the duster! Chances are you don’t use your clothes horse every day (maybe not even every week). So, when you do pull it out, make sure you give it a quick once. Have a duster to hand and use before you hang your wet garments on it.
Water and dust don’t mix well and will leave your whites… not so white. Simply run the duster lightly over each rung to get rid of any dust particles. Then you can hang out your washing on the clothes horse.
Equally as important as wiping down the clothes horse is making sure you look after its folding mechanism. Every shelf or arm needs to fold out properly so you have as much drying space as possible. Therefore, you so you should regularly check the hinges. And did you know stiff hinges can be loosened with WD-40 Specialist® Dry PFTE Lubricant?
This spray provides enhanced lubrication and protection, and resists dust, dirt, and oil. The handy Smart Straw gives two ways to spray. Use the flip-up straw for hard-to-reach areas. Then flip it down to use the wide-angle spray eye for larger area coverage on surfaces.
It’s no use putting your clothes horse right next to a radiator or or worse still in front of the fire. Not only is this dangerous and could cause singed clothes, but it also encourages mould growth. By placing damp clothes right next to walls, you are letting the water evaporate and go up the plaster, possibly causing unsightly mould.
Instead, make sure you place the clothes horse in the sunniest and airiest space in your home to speed up the drying time. Take care to hang your clothes neatly, using hangers where possible, and ensure they are spread out. This will reduce drying time and will keep creases at bay.
No one wants red-tinged clothing! Moisture and metal don’t mix, and there would be nothing worse than ruining your favourite sweater by placing it on a metal rail that’s gone rusty. Loosen any areas of rust by spraying some WD-40® Multi-Use Product on a cloth and gently rubbing the area. You can also prevent any further corrosion by coating your clothes horse in WD-40® Multi-Use Product, massaging the product in, and wiping away to leave an invisible protective barrier.
Once you’ve cleaned and protected your clothes horse, it’s important to store it away properly. Ideally choose a clean, dry cupboard or wardrobe. If you are lucky enough to have a laundry room, store it as far away as possible from the sink, and wherever possible cover it. You may also want to consider hanging it from hooks behind a door or on the wall away from any ground-level moisture.
