Door handles are an essential mechanism we use on a daily basis, so it’s important to ensure they are regularly maintained. If your door handle is loose, squeaky, or difficult to turn, it’s time to fix it and ensure it operates smoothly. Luckily, you’re in the right place! This step-by-step guide will help you learn how to fix a door handle like a pro! Ready to get started?
Screwdriver
Replacement screws (if needed)
Rag or paper towels
Pliers (optional)
Clean microfibre cloth
Small brush or toothbrush
Let’s get going! Once you have identified which door handle needs a little TLC, start by closing the door and locating the screws on the handle. Typically, you’ll find screws on both sides of the handle and possibly a small cover plate.
Then, use an appropriate screwdriver to remove these screws. Keep them in a safe place – you’ll need them again later! Once removed, carefully separate the two halves of the door handle, exposing the interior mechanism. Be cautious as there may be small parts inside.
Now you have opened the door handle, examine the interior mechanism for any signs of rust, dirt, or wear. If you see rust on metal parts, it’s essential to address it.
Using the handy Flexible Straw system, apply WD-40® Multi-Use Product Flexible Straw to the rusty areas and use a small brush or toothbrush to gently work away at them. The innovative formula effectively works to dislodge rust and grime for easy removal.
Once you are happy with your rust removal, it’s time to address the stiffness and squeaking. With the interior mechanism exposed, identify the moving parts, such as springs, levers, and the spindle. Then, again using the Flexible Straw to reach all of the nooks and crannies, apply a generous amount of WD-40® Multi-use Product Flexible Straw. The specialist formula will act fast to help lubricate the inner workings to ensure smooth, squeak free movement. Once complete, use a clean microfibre cloth to wipe away any excess residue.
Next, it’s time to re-attach the two halves of the door handle, aligning them properly. Make sure any small components inside are correctly positioned.
Then, insert and tighten the screws to secure the handle back in place. Use the original screws, or if they were damaged or worn, use replacement screws of the same size and type.
Once you have successfully re-attached your handle, open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant and ensure the handle operates smoothly. Double check for any remaining stiffness or resistance, and, if necessary, apply more lubricant to problem areas until the door handle moves freely.
When you are happy with your fixed handle, it’s important to not let it get to that state again. To prevent future issues, periodically inspect and lubricate your door handle. Aim to do this at least once a year, or more frequently, if the handle sees heavy use.
