Screwdriver
Wrench
To discover the source of the annoying squeaking, you need to get up close and personal with your office chairs inner workings. To do this efficiently, place the base of the seat onto your desk, so that the chair is sitting upside-down. If your office chair has arms , it may be worthwhile disconnecting them whilst you carry out your maintenance.
Next, now your chair is flipped over, you can check all the nuts and bolts underneath your chair. Look to see if any of them are loose. Loose bolts may cause squeaking as the metal is allowed to move around freely. So, if you notice any loose appendages, take a wrench or screwdriver and tighten them up. Whilst you are checking the tightness of the bolts, also ensure that they are all aligned correctly. If you notice any bolts are not perpendicular to the base of the chair, unscrew them and replace them.
If, after you have tightened all your nuts and bolts, your chair is still squeaking, it’s time to add a little lubrication into the mix. Firstly, source where the squeaking is coming from. For all areas except the air lift piston, use WD-40® Multi-Use Product Flexible Straw to gently spray the versatile lubricant into the affected joint. Using the bendable Flexible Straw feature will allow you to reach into small, tight spaces, so you can target the product to directly where it is needed. Allow the product to dry fully before turning the chair back over, so it has a chance to lubricate the entire affected area.
If the squeak is coming from your air lift piston, complete the same actions as the step above, but this time using WD-40 Specialist® Silicone Spray. This product is more suitable for lubricating the air lift piston, as it works well with the rubber material found in the O ring of your chair.
Once you turn your chair back over, ensure to promptly wipe up any excess product to prevent staining or damage to your surroundings.
