Imagine this. You’re about to take out your favourite purse or wallet with you, you love it, but you’ve just realised the zip is discoloured and tarnished. It ruins your look completely! Maintaining your brass zips is vital if you want to keep your purses/ wallets looking fresh.
Brass as a metal tends to be shiny, and polished, however, just like other metals, it can tarnish and age with use. You may even find your brass zip is starting to change to a blue/ green colour. This may be due to contact with water.
So, how can you maintain your brass zips to prevent this from happening? Well, this simple guide will show you how, step-by-step.
To start, take some masking tape and cut out some pieces of long strips. Then, use these strips to mask off areas of your purse or wallet that you want to protect. This step is important to prevent damage to your item when applying products close to it.
Tip: Wearing gloves will help to prevent oil from your hands from getting onto the brass zip. Oil is one of the factors that can make a brass item tarnish, therefore if you’re constantly touching the zip, it may discolour.
Next, take a suitable brass cleaner and carefully follow the instructions displayed on the product.
After following these instructions, give your zip a wipe down with a clean microfibre cloth to remove any excess solution.
After that, spray the WD-40 Product onto a clean microfibre cloth, and massage it onto the brass zip. Be cautious not to apply over the masking tape outline you’ve created, as we don’t want to cause any damage. But don’t worry, the flexible straw on this product will allow you to spray the product with accuracy, making it easier for you to apply without the mess.
Allow the formula to sit for about 15 minutes.
Now that you’ve given the formula time to sit, take the other cloth and wet it under a running tap. With the cloth, wipe down the zip to remove any remaining product. Using a cloth to rinse the zip will stop the rest of your purse or wallet from getting wet.
You may want to allow time to air-dry before use.
