Replacing bicycle pedals is an essential skill that every cyclist should know – but many have no idea where to start! Whether you’re upgrading your pedals or fixing a broken one, this WD-40® step-by-step guide on how to remove bike pedals will walk you through the process.
So, are you ready to get back on the road? Let’s get started!
Adjustable wrench
Bike stand
Rag or microfibre cloth
New pedals
Lets get started removing your bike pedals! Firstly, you are going to want to make sure you have a clear workspace for the most efficient process. Make sure you have all of your equipment ready, alongside your new pedals. It’s also a good idea to give the area around the pedals a thorough clean before beginning the process.
Before you begin the removal, it is a good idea to ensure you know which pedals go where. Bicycle pedals have a left and right side – the right pedal tightens clockwise, while the left pedal tightens counter-clockwise. If you are unsure, stand on the side of the bike to see the orientation clearly.
Once you have deciphered this, flip your bike upside down or place it on a bike stand to easily access the pedals. This will also prevent the chain from getting in the way.
Now you have completed all of the necessary prep, it is time to remove the pedals!
Use your adjustable wrench to hold onto the flats of the pedal (the part that sticks out from the crank, where you place your foot). Turn the wrench in the opposite direction of the pedal rotation. Remember, righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.
So, for the right pedal, turn the wrench clockwise. For the left pedal, turn it counter-clockwise. Unscrew both pedals completely.
Before installing the new pedals, apply a small amount of WD-40® Multi-Use Product to the threads. This will make it easier to remove and re-install pedals in the future as the threads will be well lubricated. Plus, the innovative formula will also help to prevent rust formation, thanks to its unique water displacing properties.
Now that everything is prepped for installation, it’s time to fit your new pedals! Take the right pedal and twist it into the right crank arm by turning it clockwise. Use your fingers to start twisting it on, then switch to the wrench when it becomes difficult to turn by hand. Make sure the pedal goes in straight and doesn’t cross-thread.
For the left pedal, turn it into the left crank arm by turning it counter-clockwise. Again, use your fingers to start and then switch to the wrench.
Then, use your adjustable wrench to snugly tighten the pedals further. Make sure they’re securely tightened, but don’t overdo it – you could damage the crank threads.
Now that your new pedals are perfectly installed, take this opportunity to wipe off any excess product from the pedal threads and surrounding area using a rag or microfibre cloth.
Finally, you’re going to want to give your pedals a test to ensure they are safely installed. Gently spin the pedals to make sure they rotate smoothly without any wobbling or clicking sounds. If you notice these, they might not have been threaded in correctly.
