Step 1
Prevent Iron Gates Rusting by Protecting Them!
As new iron gates can be oxidised easily, it is important to protect it before it gets exposed to the elements this will prevent future rusting. The most effective way to protect your iron from rust is to create a barrier using an epoxy primer. You will find one of these at your local DIY store. Simply apply this liquid with a brush or roller and allow to dry thoroughly before applying a secondary coat. These two layers will form your base protection.
Step 2
Paint Your Iron Fence For Extra Rust Protection
Once your base layers have dried down completely, you should move on to applying a protective paint covering. This layer will completely coat the structure of your iron gate, counteracting any water penetration and therefore preventing rust damage.
Ideally, you should shop around for a solvent enamel paint, which will dry down quickly, however an acrylic enamel paint will work just as well. You can customise the colour of this layer to match your personal style preferences, too!
Step 3
Protect The Gates Hinges, Locks, And Latches
Now that you have successfully protected the main body of your gate, you should pay some attention to the locks, handles, hinges, latches and sliding mechanisms of your iron gate to ensure they are adequately protected.
You can treat all of these parts with a spritz of WD-40® Multi-Use product. Simply spray the product directly onto the mechanisms and allow the product to dry. This will form a water displacing protective barrier that will prevent rusting in the future, and will also help any moving parts to slide easily without squeaking or sticking
